What are Google Display Ads?

Google Display Ads are visual ads that can reach people across websites, apps and other eligible inventory. In 2026 Google began moving Display campaign creation into Demand Gen: the Google Display Network remains available, but advertisers are increasingly managing Display inventory from the Demand Gen campaign workflow.

This means “Display Ads” still describes the visual inventory people see, while “Demand Gen” increasingly describes the campaign environment used to buy that inventory.

Where is it seen?

Display inventory can appear across the Google Display Network, which includes eligible websites and apps. Through Demand Gen, advertisers can also combine that inventory with visual Google surfaces such as YouTube, Discover and Gmail, and Google is expanding Maps availability.

If a campaign is configured for Display-only delivery, the important surface is still the Google Display Network rather than every Demand Gen channel.

What does it look like?

Most Display campaigns use responsive display ads. You supply assets such as images, logos, headlines, descriptions and sometimes video, and Google adapts combinations to fit different advertising spaces. Uploaded image ads can also be used in eligible setups.

How does it work?

You provide creative assets, campaign goals, budget, audience settings and any placement or content controls that are available. Google enters eligible auctions and decides when and where the ad can serve.

As Display moves into Demand Gen, advertisers can use the Google Display Network as a channel within that campaign type instead of treating Display and Demand Gen as completely separate systems.

Is it instant? How long does it take?

Ads can begin serving after the campaign, assets and destination are eligible and approved. New campaigns and substantial changes can also need time to propagate and move through automated learning before performance is representative.

Why can’t I see it?

You may not see your own Display ad because the network contains a very large number of websites and apps. Delivery is influenced by audience eligibility, placements, budget, bidding, frequency controls, content suitability and auction conditions.

Who decides what appears?

You control goals, budgets, creative assets, location, audience settings and available placement or content exclusions. Google controls individual auctions and, when responsive ads or automated targeting are used, much of the final combination and delivery.

What does it cost?

Display campaigns use auction-based pricing and can optimise around different bidding goals. Depending on campaign settings, advertisers may focus on clicks, conversions, conversion value or visibility. Actual cost varies widely by audience, inventory, geography and competition.

How do you know if it is working?

Review impressions and reach for visibility, then clicks, engaged website sessions, key events, conversions and cost per useful action for performance. Placement and audience reporting can help identify low-value traffic or unsuitable inventory.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Display campaigns being discontinued?

The Display inventory is not disappearing. Google is moving the Google Display Network into the Demand Gen campaign workflow, including a phased migration of eligible existing Display campaigns.

Can I still run Display-only advertising?

Yes. Google states that advertisers who want Display-only campaigns can continue to use Google Display Network inventory through Demand Gen rather than being forced to use every visual channel.

Is Display the same as Demand Gen?

No. Display describes the inventory and ad experience across the Google Display Network. Demand Gen is a broader campaign type that can combine Display with YouTube, Discover, Gmail and other eligible visual surfaces.

Why do my Display ads not appear on every website I visit?

Delivery depends on audience eligibility, campaign settings, suitability controls, budget, bidding and the auction for each available placement. An eligible campaign is not guaranteed to show on a particular visit.
