What are Google Demand Gen Ads?

Google Demand Gen is a visual advertising campaign type designed to create demand and drive action while people browse Google and YouTube rather than only when they type a search query. In 2026 it also became the new campaign home for Google Display Network inventory.

It is useful to think of Demand Gen as Google’s visual, audience-led campaign environment rather than as another version of a Search campaign.

Where is it seen?

Demand Gen campaigns can serve across YouTube, including Shorts, Discover, Gmail, the Google Display Network and eligible Maps inventory. The exact surfaces available can depend on campaign settings, account rollout and Google’s current channel controls.

What does it look like?

There is no single Demand Gen ad layout. Depending on the surface, people may see image ads, video ads, carousel-style creative or other visual combinations adapted to the placement.

The same campaign can therefore look quite different on YouTube Shorts, Discover or a website in the Display Network.

How does it work?

You provide campaign goals, audience inputs, creative assets, budget and bidding settings. Google then uses those inputs and its delivery systems to decide which eligible people, channels and auctions are most likely to support the campaign objective.

Channel controls can provide more say over where delivery occurs, while broader settings let Google distribute budget across more of the available visual inventory.

Is it instant? How long does it take?

Demand Gen is paid media, so it does not wait for organic indexing. Ads still need to be reviewed and eligible, and Google recommends allowing time for campaign changes and automated bidding to learn from enough conversion data before making repeated major adjustments.

Why can’t I see it?

You may not see your own ad because Demand Gen does not buy a fixed placement. Delivery varies by audience eligibility, channel, inventory, budget, bidding, frequency and the predicted value of each auction.

Trying to trigger an ad yourself is therefore not a reliable delivery check; campaign reporting is more useful evidence.

Who decides what appears?

You control the campaign goal, budget, creative, landing pages, audience inputs and the channel or placement controls made available in your account. Google controls the auction-level decisions, including whether an impression is served and which eligible asset combination is used.

What does it cost?

Demand Gen is auction-based and can use different bidding and billing approaches depending on the campaign goal, surface and format. Advertisers may optimise toward clicks, conversions, conversion value or other supported outcomes rather than paying a fixed price for a particular placement.

How do you know if it is working?

Useful measures can include impressions, reach, clicks, video engagement, website sessions, key events, conversions, conversion value and cost per useful outcome. View-through or assisted behaviour can also matter for visual campaigns, but should be interpreted alongside actual business results rather than used as a substitute for them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Demand Gen replacing Google Display Ads?

Google is moving Display campaign creation and eligible existing Display campaigns into Demand Gen. The Google Display Network remains available; it is the campaign workflow that is changing.

Can Demand Gen run only on the Display Network?

Google states that advertisers who want Display-only campaigns can continue to use GDN inventory within Demand Gen rather than automatically using every visual surface.

Is Demand Gen the same as Performance Max?

No. Both use automation, but they are different campaign types with different inventory, controls and typical use cases. Demand Gen is centred on visual demand creation and engagement across its supported surfaces.

Why does Demand Gen need strong images and video?

The campaign serves across highly visual placements. Better-suited creative gives the system more useful assets to adapt to different surfaces and screen shapes.
