What is Google Performance Max?

Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that can use Google's advertising inventory across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign. It relies heavily on Google AI to decide how budget, bids and creative are used across those channels.

It is designed around conversion goals rather than giving the advertiser manual control over a single placement or channel.

Where is it seen?

Performance Max can serve across Google's available advertising inventory, including Google Search, YouTube, Display placements, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Retail campaigns can also use Merchant Center product data where applicable.

Because one campaign can work across several surfaces, two people may encounter very different versions of the same campaign.

What does it look like?

There is no single Performance Max ad format. One person might see a text-style ad on Search, another an image or video placement, and another a product-led placement generated from a shopping feed.

The campaign uses the assets and data supplied by the advertiser to build combinations that fit the inventory where Google chooses to serve.

How does it work?

The advertiser sets conversion goals, budget, geography and other campaign controls, then supplies asset groups such as headlines, descriptions, images, video and, where relevant, product feeds. Audience signals and search themes can provide additional guidance.

Google AI then uses Smart Bidding and real-time signals to decide which eligible users, inventory, bids and creative combinations may best support the campaign's conversion goals.

Is it instant? How long does it take?

A Performance Max campaign can begin serving once it is eligible, but useful optimisation is not instant. The system needs time and enough conversion data to learn how different combinations of audience, inventory, bidding and creative perform.

Large changes to goals, budget, bidding or assets can also change delivery while the system adapts.

Why can’t I see it?

Performance Max does not promise that your ad will appear on a particular channel, website, search or device. Budget can be distributed across several Google surfaces based on the campaign's goals and the opportunities available at that moment.

The absence of an ad in your own search or YouTube session is therefore not evidence that the campaign is inactive. Campaign reporting and channel-level insights are more useful.

Who decides what appears?

The advertiser controls the business goal, conversion actions, budget, geographic settings, assets, feeds, audience signals, search themes and the exclusions or suitability controls that Google makes available.

Google's automation controls much of the real-time bidding, audience selection, channel allocation and asset combination within those settings. Performance Max therefore trades some manual placement control for cross-channel automation.

What does it cost?

You set a campaign budget and Performance Max uses automated bidding to pursue the selected conversion goals. Common strategies focus on maximising conversions or conversion value, with optional targets such as target CPA or target ROAS where appropriate.

There is no fixed price for appearing on a particular Google channel. Spend is allocated through Google's advertising auctions according to campaign settings and available opportunities.

How do you know if it is working?

The main measures should follow the goal the campaign is optimising for: conversions, conversion value, cost per conversion, return on ad spend and the quality of generated leads or sales.

Asset, audience and search insight reporting can help explain where performance is coming from, while website analytics can validate total users, sessions, key events and downstream outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Performance Max just a Display campaign?

No. It can use inventory across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps and other eligible Google Ads surfaces from a single campaign.

Does Performance Max replace Google Search campaigns?

Not automatically. Google describes Performance Max as a campaign type that can complement keyword-based Search campaigns. The right mix depends on the account’s goals and the level of control required.

Can I make Performance Max use only one channel?

Performance Max is designed as a cross-channel campaign. You can apply available exclusions and suitability controls, but it is not intended to provide the same channel-by-channel control as separate campaign types.

Why can performance change after I edit the campaign?

Changes to budget, conversion goals, bidding, assets or other important settings can change the signals the automated system is working with. Delivery may shift while it adapts to those changes.

Can Performance Max use a product feed?

Yes. Retail advertisers can connect eligible Merchant Center product data so products can be used in campaign delivery alongside other campaign assets.
