Stage 3: Adding the New Tracking Tag to Your Website
Step 1: Sign into Google Tag Manager
- Action: Visit Google Tag Manager and log in with the same Google account used for your GA4 analytics.
- Purpose: To manage tags for your website without editing code directly.
Step 2: Create a New Tag Manager Account
- Action: Upon login, choose the option to create a new account.
- Details: Enter a name for your account and select the country where your site is based.
Step 3: Container Setup
- Action: Scroll down and complete the container setup. Use the same name as your account for consistency, such as imexpert.au.
- Outcome: You can create multiple containers within the same account if managing different websites or environments.
Step 4: Accept Terms of Service
- Action: Agree to the Terms of Service and data processing terms as required.
- Outcome: After agreeing to the terms, allow 10-20 seconds for the system to process your new account.
Step 5: Obtain Tag Manager Code
- Action: Once processed, a new Google Tag Manager (GTM) code will be displayed, which needs to be added to your WordPress site.
- Outcome: Click ‘OK’ to confirm and proceed.
Step 6: Introduction to Tags
- Explanation: In Google Tag Manager, ‘tags’ are snippets of JavaScript or tracking pixels that collect and send information to third parties like Google Analytics. Tags can track user interactions such as clicks, form submissions, and page visits.
Step 7: Setting Up Tags for GA4
- Action: Prepare to add several specific tags:
- GA4 Configuration Tag: This tag sends page view data to GA4.
- Event Tracking Tag: Tracks specific user actions on your site.
- Key Event Tracking: Monitors critical interactions, which may include downloads, video plays, and eCommerce transactions.
Step 8: Implement Tag Manager Code
- Action: This code needs to be added to the head and body sections of your WordPress site. This part will be covered in more detail later.
