Measure email marketing by connecting campaign delivery and engagement with website actions and verified enquiries or sales. Opens and clicks can help diagnose the journey, but they are not the same as a business result.
Agree the main outcome before sending. A newsletter designed to educate existing customers has a different immediate purpose from a product promotion or a consultation offer.
Treat engagement metrics as signals
Email security tools and privacy features can generate automated opens or clicks. Mailchimp’s bot-filtering guidance explains how this activity affects reporting and recommends looking beyond engagement to measures such as conversions, unsubscribes and bounces.
Use consistent filtering settings when comparing campaigns. A change in reporting rules can change the figures without proving that readers have become more or less interested.
Use consistent campaign links
Give the campaign a clear naming convention and apply it to the relevant website links. In GA4, review the associated Sessions, Total users and Key events. Test that redirects keep the parameters and that successful forms or purchases are recorded correctly.
Do not include a person’s name or email address in the URL parameters. Campaign tracking should identify the marketing activity, not expose the recipient’s personal information.
Match the website action with the business record
A quote request should have a matching enquiry record. A purchase should have an order identifier. These records help you separate genuine outcomes from repeated events, test submissions or incomplete transactions.
- For services: report qualified enquiries, appointments and customers won.
- For ecommerce: report orders, net revenue, returns and the cost of fulfilling those orders.
- For educational content: report the intended action, then assess whether it supports later customer activity.
Where someone replies to the email or phones directly, your website analytics may not see that outcome. Give the team a simple way to record the campaign connection when it is known.
Keep attribution and causation separate
An email platform, GA4 and the sales system can assign credit differently. Show each source clearly. Do not add attributed revenue from several marketing platforms and call the sum total business revenue.
For larger programmes, a properly designed holdout test can help assess incremental impact. For smaller lists, a consistent review of campaign outcomes and customer feedback is often a more practical starting point. Neither a click nor a before-and-after comparison proves the email caused every sale reported.
Use a short, repeatable scorecard
Record the audience, offer, send date, delivery issues, useful website activity and business outcomes. Then note the next action: clarify the offer, improve the destination, refine the audience or change follow-up.
For a commercial review, distinguish media or sending costs from content, design and management costs. If you calculate a return, state which costs and which revenue source you used.
