What is AI Answers & AEO?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is a practical term for improving how clearly a business and its information can be understood, retrieved and referenced by AI-powered search and answer experiences. It builds on strong SEO, technically accessible websites and useful content rather than replacing them.
Different AI systems work differently, so there is no single universal “AEO ranking” or one optimisation that guarantees a mention.
Where is it seen?
AI-generated discovery can appear in experiences such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and other AI assistants or answer engines. Some experiences show citations and links; others may mention entities or summarise information without presenting a conventional ranked list.
What does it look like?
An AI answer can combine generated text with supporting links, citations, product information, local information or other interface elements. The same question can produce different sources or wording at different times because the system may retrieve and synthesise information dynamically.
How does it work?
Google explains that its generative Search features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems and can use retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out to find supporting pages. Other AI platforms have their own retrieval, search and citation systems.
For a website, the practical foundation remains clear content, crawlability, indexability where required, strong entity information and evidence that supports the claims being made.
Is it instant? How long does it take?
AEO is not instant. A page may need to be crawled, indexed or otherwise discovered before an answer engine can use it, and even an eligible source is not guaranteed to be selected for a particular answer. Changes can take time to be recrawled and reflected.
Why can’t I see it?
An AI system may choose other sources because your page is not accessible, not indexed where required, not sufficiently relevant, unclear, outdated or simply not selected for that particular answer. AI responses can also vary because systems use different models, retrieval methods and context.
Who decides what appears?
You control the website, its technical accessibility, content quality, structured information and the accuracy of your business details. The AI or search platform controls retrieval, synthesis, citation and whether your source is included in a specific answer.
Is it paid or organic?
AEO is an organic visibility discipline, not a media-buying product. Paid AI advertising is separate. Buying an ad does not purchase an organic citation, and improving organic answer visibility does not guarantee paid placement.
What does it cost?
There is no universal cost per citation or media fee for organic AI visibility. The cost is the work required to improve the website, content, data consistency, authority and measurement needed to make the business a stronger source.
How do you know if it is working?
Measurement is still developing and differs by platform. Useful evidence can include Google generative Search visibility, Bing AI citation data, cited pages, grounding queries, identifiable AI referral sessions, total users, key events and lead quality.
Crawler activity can help confirm technical access, but a crawler visit by itself is not proof that a business was cited or recommended to a user.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Google explicitly says established SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI features. AEO is better understood as an extension of how businesses think about search and answer visibility.
Do I need special AI schema to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no additional technical requirements or special schema.org markup needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being eligible for Search and following normal SEO best practices.
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in Google AI features?
Google states that you do not need new machine-readable AI files or special markup to appear in its AI Search features. Other systems may have different crawler or access controls, so llms.txt should not be presented as a universal ranking requirement.
Can AEO guarantee that ChatGPT, Google or Copilot names my business?
No. You can improve the quality, clarity and accessibility of the source information, but the platform decides which information and sources are used for each answer.
