What are Meta Stories & Reels Ads?
Meta Stories and Reels Ads are vertical, mobile-first placements designed to appear inside the full-screen Stories and Reels experiences on Facebook and Instagram. They are built for fast visual attention rather than a traditional desktop-style banner.
Where is it seen?
Eligible ads can appear between organic Stories and within the immersive Facebook and Instagram Reels experiences. Reels can also be included automatically when Advantage+ placements are used.
What does it look like?
The strongest creative usually fills the vertical screen. Meta recommends Reels creative built around a 9:16 format, with important text and branding kept within safe zones. Reels commonly plays in a sound-on environment when the user has sound enabled.
How does it work?
You create a Meta campaign, provide vertical-friendly image or video assets, choose the objective and budget, and allow eligible Stories/Reels placements or select them manually where supported. Meta then enters auctions for people likely to produce the chosen result.
Is it instant? How long does it take?
Ads can start after review and eligibility checks. Delivery may still take time to stabilise while Meta learns which audiences, placements and creative combinations are most likely to meet the campaign objective.
Why can’t I see it?
Reels and Stories are personalised streams, so your own ad will not appear every time you browse. Delivery depends on auction conditions, audience eligibility, budget, frequency and the selected placement settings.
Who decides what appears?
You control the creative, objective, budget and available placement choices. Meta controls the auction and decides when the ad is delivered within an eligible Stories or Reels session.
Is it paid or organic?
Stories and Reels Ads are paid placements, visually separated and labelled as advertising. They are different from organic Stories or Reels published by a business or creator.
What does it cost?
There is no fixed price for a Reels or Stories position. These placements participate in Meta’s auction and the campaign is optimised around the objective and performance goal you choose.
How do you know if it is working?
Depending on the objective, useful measures include reach, impressions, video plays, engagement, clicks, leads, purchases, conversion value and cost per result. For performance campaigns, creative engagement should be connected back to actual conversions rather than judged in isolation.

Frequently asked questions
Do Reels Ads need to be video?
Meta can support different eligible assets, but its own guidance recommends native vertical video with audio and important content inside the safe zone for stronger Reels creative fit.
Can I select Reels manually?
Meta supports manual placement selection for eligible campaigns, while Advantage+ placements can include Facebook and Instagram Reels automatically.
Why does my landscape creative look awkward in Reels?
Reels is a vertical full-screen experience. Assets designed for landscape placements may be cropped or adapted, so native 9:16 creative is generally a better fit.
Are Stories and Reels organic posts or paid ads?
Both organic and paid versions exist. This guide covers paid Stories and Reels placements created through Meta advertising.
